Speakers’ Profiles

Our exciting guest speakers are David Wethey, Guy Pask, Megan Jenkinson and Stefan Roberts. They have been carefully selected to inform and inspire you throughout the convention with their expertise, thoughts and concepts on creative image making and design, their knowledge of photographic trends now and into the future and to challenge you to find your motivation and purpose for photography.

David Wethey

David Wethey

Dave Wethey has worked through some remarkable changes in the photography industry from sheet film 4x5 Speed Grafix cameras to the latest in digital technology. He runs an imaging and photography consultancy, having come from a professional career spanning almost three decades in the newspaper industry where he worked as a chief photographer, a specialist in digital imaging and as an illustrations editor.

He has been involved extensively in the implementation of digital technology for well over a decade and has comprehensive knowledge of digital cameras, applications, systems, digital management and publishing. He has been involved in teaching and training in photography, digital imaging, design and the effective use of images in the newspaper industry, tertiary institutions and businesses.

David is a truly engaging, captivating and entertaining speaker who will embrace you with his presentation on photography as it is now and his view of Photography’s future.

Guy Pask

Creative Director, Strategy Design and Advertising

Guy Pask is founding partner and creative director of Strategy Design and Advertising. Strategy's multidisciplinary studio practice is centred around the principles of thinking, image-making, and craft.

Guy Pask

Founded in 1992, Strategy has studios in both Christchurch and Sydney. Its work has been published or recognised by Clio, ADC (Art Directors Club) TDC (Type Directors Club), The One Show, AWARD, AGDA, MAPDA, Graphis Poster, NZ Poster Art, Prodesign, Urbis, Desktop, Unlimited, and the NZ Best Design Awards (winner large and small scale identity '03, '05 and '06).

Guy is currently chairman of CPIT's Bdes. course advisory, a trustee of the Christchurch Art Gallery and a former council member of DINZ. He has been a judge for the New Zealand Best Design Awards, and AWARD (Australasian Writers and Art Directors).

Outside his work, Guy has recently designed the three-volume set of limited edition Fiordland prints by Andris Apse. And, quoting from Andris’s website:

“…Convenor of judges Grant Letfus described the book as an example of craftsmanship on a grand scale.

The judges were unanimous in their praises of the obvious teamwork and pride in all areas of design, prepress, print and binding, culminating in the realisation of Andris Apse's vision…”

Guy is fundamentally and image-maker. He makes images that have a strong emotional connection with people in a commercial context. Guy’s presentation will focus on photographic image making.

Megan Jenkinson

Antarctic Arts Fellow, Senior Lecturer, Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland

As an artist, Megan works primarily with the medium of photography. She has exhibited her work over a thirty-year period, both nationally and internationally at major art events and in significant exhibitions such as

  • the Esslingen Photo Triennale, 1989,
  • the Sydney Biennale, 1990,
  • the Sharjah Biennale in 1999,
  • Photography Now, 1989 at the Victoria and Albert Museum (to commemorate the first 150 years of Photography)

She went to Antarctica as an Antarctic Artists Fellow in December 2005 and her experiences there have resulted in the following exhibitions

  • The Dark Continent, Jonathon Smart Gallery and
  • The Weight of Water, Mark Hutchins Gallery.

She recently set up an installation at the Christchurch Art Gallery featuring the fossils collected by Scott's Polar Party on their fated return journey from the Pole in 1912.

Megan’s most significant project to date has been The Virtues, 1996, a travelling exhibition that went to eight public venues in New Zealand, and its accompanying book Under The Aegis: The Virtues, 1997. This series was awarded a major prize in 1999 by an international jury at the Sharjah Biennale.

We are very fortunate to have Megan as the keynote speaker at our convention. She will talk about the ‘Notions of the creative process’.

Stefan Roberts

Course Leader, Professional Photography Programmes,
Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT)

Stefan Roberts passion for photography lies in both education and in the arts.

Stefan Roberts

Stefan is the Course Leader of the Professional Photography Programmes within the School of Art & Design at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT). The courses within the photography programmes are industry-focused and deliver the technical and creative shills needed to be a successful image-maker. Stefan teaches across the broad range of subjects from the studio environment to the digital darkroom, covering both aesthetic and technical aspects of photography.

His own photographs are regularly exhibited in Christchurch and have been seen throughout New Zealand. His photographic work is represented by Campbell Grant Galleries in Christchurch.

Stefan Roberts is known for his distinctive style of creating photographs during the night. He received recognition from Te Papa Museum, Waikato National Art Awards and numerous other photographic competitions.

Stefan will talk about finding motivation and a purpose for your photography. His images are truly spellbinding and will leave you with that ‘wow’ factor and wanting to see more.
