National Convention 2008 – Speakers
These are the incredible speakers who presented at the 2008 national convention in Timaru.
Anand Satyanand
The conference was opened by the Govenor-General of New Zealand, the Honourable Anand Satyanand. A full transcript of his speech can be found here.
John Doogan FNZIPP
John Doogan is a commercial photographer and digital retoucher from Christchurch. He has been using photoshop since the mid 1990s.
John is a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute Of Professional Photography, an Adobe Ambassador and a software tester for Adobe Photographic software.
He has a particular interest in landscape photography, and has won the NZIPP Landscape Photographer of the Year three times. In April 2007 he attended Photoshop World in Boston as a result of winning the NZIPP James White travel scholarship.
In November 2007, John presented what he learned in Boston at an NZIPP National Seminar series.

Robert Catto
Robert Catto is a native of Toronto, Canada now resident in NZ.
He specialises in performing arts and live events photography. His work appears in “The making of the Lord of the Rings” and promotional material for arts and events throughout New Zealand. You can see some of his work at www.catto.co.nz.
Robert enjoys being involved rather than a spectator. He takes the natural approach to photographing people. He also enjoys experimenting with the likes of his “Lensbaby”
His program on low light photography is titled “A Shot in the Dark”.
Gottlieb Braun-Elwert
Gottlieb Braun-Elwert emigrated to NZ from Germany in 1978. He and his wife Anne, set up the mountain guiding company Alpine Recreation which is now based in Tekapo. His knowledge of the Mount Cook area is extensive, and he is a member of the Canterbury Aoraki Conservation Board. Since childhood he has pursued landscape and natural history photography. His presentation will take you through the four seasons of the Mackenzie High Country. You are in for a treat.
Matheson Beaumont
Matheson Beaumont is one of PSNZ’s founder members, and has received the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. His images are displayed all over the world.
Matheson is a master of capturing our wonderful landscape with that magical light. He has just published a book of his work, “Chasing the Southern Light”.

Melanie Burford
Melanie Burford’s career began when she won the Ron Woolf National Youth Award. This was the first of many awards all leading the way to Melanie becoming a world renowned Photojournalist.
Melanie now works for The Dallas Morning News and was part of the team that won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina. Her continuing story of the McCay family devastated by the hurricane led to many more awards.
Emma Hughes
Emma Hughes lives in Waiheke Island, with her husband and two children, juggling family life with wedding, portraiture and child photography.
She started photography at school and studied it at polytech. Emma quickly establishing her place in the photographic world by winning many awards including the PSNZ Ronald Woolf Youth Award in 1996.
Emma is a truly talented photographer, and this year has an exhibition of images in the Auckland Festival of Photography.

Ron Davies
Ron Davies, a Welshman, is world renowned for his awesome Audio Visuals (AVs) with many distinctions behind his name.
Ron is a National judge of AV Championships. He has won 137 International awards including 12 Grand Prix’s, more than any AV’er in the UK. You will be enthralled by his work, and encouraged to have a go.
