PSNZ Canon Bi-monthly Online Competition – Previous Rounds
5th Round Winners for the PSNZ Canon Online 2011
From Sally Phillips, Canon Online coordinator
Thank you to all the entrants 98 in all. Also a big thank you to our judge for this Round – Diane Costello LPSNZ for your time and effort
Congratulations to Karin Charteris for her winning image ‘Battling the weather’
And to all the other place getters, it’s a hard competition to be placed in. So keep trying and it can happen. Well done to Carol Smyth as this is her first entry in Canon Online. It’s nice to have some new names and even though this is really early, A very safe and Merry Christmas to you all!
From Diane
There were many really good images in this competition. These top 10 images appealed to me as the strongest, containing the necessary components for great images.
- Battling the weather
- This image contains interest and intrigue. A moment caught in time with two individuals moving through the frame. I like the patterns, the shapes the seperation of the two individuals almost as though they are moving through two different worlds.
- RIP
- This is a very powerful image, relating to life and death – the animals death and the tree and growth on the tree growing. A resting place for an animal. Many questions remain unanswered in this image.
- Young African Girl
- Her culture is evident on her skin – the scarification which is a permanent procedure meant to decorate and beautify the body, the ear piercings, but more compelling than everything else are her eyes.
- Stop will you stop
- The story is evident in the events that are unfolding in front of your eyes. The determination and effort that the 'cowboy' is showing is evident in his face.
- Young Warrior
- There is an intensity in the face of the young warrior which poses questions.
- Egretta Alba Modesta
- This is the courtship of the Egretta's, the arching of the necks and the development of the cloak of long white feathers. They are engrossed in each other to the exclusion of everything else. It's the story of life.
- Perfectly balanced Tern
- Perfectly poised for descent. A picture of elegance in nature.
- Coal Pit Dam
- This image beckons you to enter and follow the road. This image feels like an entree' with the bigger picture just around the corner.
- Patience.
- I like the interaction between the young woman and the child even though they are strangers. The placement of the young woman's hands under the child's chin, the tilt of the head and the intensity of the moment is great.
- Golden Gate Bridge San Francisco.
- The moodiness, size and complexity of this man-made structure is awe-inspiring. The grainess compliments this image and it is very well presented.

4th Round Winners for the PSNZ Canon Online 2011
From Sally Phillips, Canon Online coordinator
How time flies and another Round finished. 116 images for Round 4 so it’s good to see the interest is still there. A big thanks to all who entered.
Congratulations to Bret Lucas with his top image ‘Fernatic’. Also to the authors of the top images placed, it would be a difficult task as there were many excellent images.
Our Judge for this Round was John Boyd Hon PSNZ, APSNZ. A big thank you to John for his time, as I know he has a busy time and only just returned from Bali and has family commitments
From John
It was a privilege to view the 4th round of the Canon Online. While ten images have been placed, there were at least 10 others which could easily have been placed, with many having either graced recent National Exhibitions or likely to do so in the future.
However, there were also some which would have benefited from having been prepared on a properly calibrated monitor or more thoughtful titles.
Although they didn’t figure prominently in the top 10, it was pleasing to see a number of abstracts and evidence of people thinking outside the norm. The wide variety of subject and treatment amongst the 116 entries was a credit to all concerned and showed the competition to be in very good heart.

3rd Round Winners for the PSNZ Canon Online 2011
From Sally Phillips, Canon Online coordinator
Thank you to all the entrants who made Round 3 such a success with 126 images in total.
The last few days had me very busy with a lot of late entries this time.
Congratulations to Janet Greenwood on your winning entry ‘On the Rocks’ and the other 9 entrants who won a place.
I hope everyone is safe and well. Our thoughts and love go out to all the families that are having a rough time with the Earthquakes.
The judge this Round was Kay L Goosen-Cooper FPSNZ from Hamilton. Thank you so much Kay for giving your time it is much appreciated. I am trying to keep the judging even with equal men and women Judges.
From Kay
As every selector before me has already said, it was very difficult to settle on only 10 images. It was relatively simple to reduce the 126 entries to about 50, but from then on I was wringing my hands over each one I had to eliminate. For all that, it has been a most enjoyable experience for me, seeing your wonderful, creative, beautiful and downright quirky images.

2nd Round Winners for the PSNZ Canon Online 2011
From Sally Phillips, Canon Online coordinator
Another Round over! I can’t believe just how fast it goes. Thank you to everyone for sending your lovely entries. There were 119 images in total and several new entrants which is always good. I feel very honoured to be able to view them all. They are certainly a diverse range of images
I hope everyone is keeping safe, warm and well
Our judge this Round is Stan Long FPSNZ from New Plymouth. Thank you Stan so much for agreeing to judge this round, and to New Zealand Post for giving both Stan and myself a few worries but all good in the end. Congratulations to all place getters.
Congratulations to the winner: Eduardo Atienzar Mortinez with his image ‘Ferry through Savanna’ and all photographers whose images placed.
From Stan
This looked quite daunting at the first run through for there are so many beautiful images to eliminate to get down to the final ten. However, the first fifty were quite easy to eliminate, some with obvious faults or subject matter lacking interest or image quality.
The final twenty were another matter for ten very good images had to be eliminated. I have tried to end up with a spread of subject matter and if possible a slight bias towards creativity. The two natural history images selected themselves with impeccable technique while the winning entry came through with a strong silhouette and a beautifully balanced composition.

1st Round Winners for the PSNZ Canon Online 2011
From Sally Phillips, Canon Online coordinator
First of all I must thank everyone who resent their images in after my computer decided to wipe everything, it’s a long story but William Wright helped me by sending a message out, Thank you William. Everything has been restored and I now have a new computer and backup system. Hopefully it will behave.
I am sure everyone will join me in sending our love and prayers for the People of Christchurch.
This Round we had 136 images so we are off to a great start, a great selection! Our Judge for this round is Trish McAuslan ASPNZ. Thank you, Trish, for your time and expertise.
Congratulations to the winner: Karin Charteris with her image ‘Shadows’ and all photographers whose images placed. To the other 126 please try again (myself included) it could be a winner next time. You have to be in to win!
From Trish
I enjoyed the wide range of subjects and approaches presented for the first round of the Canon Online this year. The quality and diversity made choosing the top images a real challenge. In the end it was those images that captured my imagination, told a story or evoked a response or emotion that made it into the top group.
There were some images that would have been in the top group, that didn’t make it through the final cut because the image was flat. A final check on the Levels would have shown that either the movement of the highlight slider or sometimes a tweak of the midtone slider would give the extra bit of ‘impact’ to take the image to a higher level.
